As Carson-Newman鈥檚 campus prepares for Homecoming 2025, the University invites the public to the 16^th聽Annual Henrietta Jenkins Memorial Homecoming Poetry Reading on Friday, Oct. 24. Free and open to the public, the 4 p.m. event will feature acclaimed poet Dr. Thomas Alan Holmes. The event will be hosted at the Appalachian Cultural Center on campus and is one of three remaining fall events for the center.

鈥淲e are really excited for our fall program at the Appalachian Cultural Center that highlights the intersections of history, language, music, and art in our region,鈥� said Dr. Wesley McMasters, director of the center. 鈥淲e have well-established voices that will celebrate the depths, complexities, and nuances of the region, and we hope to see faces from our campus and our broader community at these wonderful cultural events.鈥�

A member of East Tennessee State University鈥檚 English faculty, Holmes teaches courses in American literature, many focusing on his interests in Appalachian, Southern, and African American literature. His poetry has appeared in such journals as鈥淭he North American Review,鈥� 鈥淪till: The Journal,鈥澛犫�淭he Valparaiso Review,鈥澛犫�淭he Connecticut Review,鈥� 鈥淟ouisiana Literature,鈥� and聽鈥淎ppalachian Journal.鈥� In 2022, Iris Press published his debut poetry collection,聽鈥淚n the Backhoe’s Shadow.鈥�

The Henrietta Jenkins Memorial Homecoming Poetry Reading was established by 1963 Carson-Newman alumna Mary Patton Sarros in honor of her former professor. Seating is limited.
